Sinopsis
This book is written as a guide and a reference for Indonesian students majoring in English literature, linguistics or teaching to learn the description of individual vowels and consonants used to form words in English. The varieties of English used for this book are the British English Received Pronunciation and the Northern/General American English. Through this book students are introduced to English speech sounds and learned how the speech sounds are produced. They will also learn sound patterns which stretch over longer chunks of speech (stress, rhythm and intonation). It is expected that through learning these, students are able to:
- Understand how to produce English sounds, especially the British English;
- Know the difference between the British and American English sounds;
- Be more appreciative of their native language, i.e. the Indonesian language, especially in terms of its speech inventory.
It is also expected that this book will assist students to write the phonemic symbols of the sounds, to pronounce English vowels and consonants sounds, to articulate words, phrases, and sentences in English, to identify the main intonations and what they express/signify, and to use appropriate intonations. One important note, this book only covers the segmental aspects of English phonology. Therefore, the supra-segmental (i.e. intonation, rhythm, and the other prosodic features) are not discussed.
