Synopsis
The study of ratio and proportion is a fundamental component of mathematics education, serving as a cornerstone for advanced mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. However, many students encounter difficulties in understanding proportional relationships because instructional practices often present these concepts in abstract ways, disconnected from their everyday experiences. This challenge motivates the development of learning theories that are meaningful, contextual, and accessible.
This book introduces a Local Instructional Theory (LIT) designed to support students’ proportional reasoning through agricultural activities in Belitang, a region well known for its rich farming traditions. By utilizing local agricultural contexts, students are provided with opportunities to engage in mathematical reasoning through situations that are familiar and relevant to their daily lives.
The integration of agricultural activities into mathematics learning reflects the principles of contextual and realistic mathematics education. Through activities such as land measurement, seed distribution, crop production comparison, and resource allocation, students can construct mathematical understanding from authentic experiences. Such learning environments encourage active participation and deeper conceptual understanding.
One of the central aims of this book is to demonstrate how local wisdom and community practices can become valuable resources for mathematics instruction. The agricultural activities of Belitang offer meaningful situations in which ratio and proportion naturally emerge, enabling students to develop reasoning skills through exploration, discussion, and reflection.
The concept of proportional reasoning is emphasized throughout the book because it plays a crucial role in students’ mathematical development. Proportional reasoning extends beyond the ability to perform calculations; it involves understanding relationships between quantities, recognizing patterns, making comparisons, and solving complex problems in various contexts. This book presents the theoretical foundations underlying the development of the Local Instructional Theory, including perspectives from mathematics education research, realistic mathematics education, and socio-cultural learning theories. These foundations provide a framework for understanding how students learn mathematical concepts through meaningful interactions with their environment
