Sinopsis
The term Functional Language is actually the name of a group of linguistic theories which in general can be classified into functional linguistics, including the functional discourse grammar developed by the Dutch linguist Simon Dik and the systemic functional grammar developed by the English linguist Michael A. K. Halliday. Another way to understand the importance of grammatical choices is to view them in terms of how language functions in any text or interaction. For example, depending on the choices made in courtroom cases, language can serve to intimidate and exercise power over a witness  as well as seek information. This emphasis on function over form gave rise to the terms functional grammar and Systemic Functional Linguistics (abbreviated as SFL). The functional perspective argues that language looks the way it does because of the function it has, in other words, how we use it to make meaning. This perspective focuses on how form performs various functions of meaning, not on the form itself. The following activity further explains what this approach can offer. Functional grammar as described by Halliday is related to meaning. Functional grammar views language as consisting of units of meaning rather than pieces of form. This unit of meaning is represented in various spoken and written texts. True to his idea, functional grammar is more interested in analyzing language at the text level than the sentence. Furthermore Halliday writes that there are 3 lines of meaning in the clause. (1) The theme functions in the clause structure as a message (2) the subject functions in the clause structure as an exchange (3) the actor functions in the clause structure as a representation. Giving more explanation about functional grammar, he adds that functional grammar makes extensive use of function labels like actor, process, goal, theme & rheme, etc. This book consists of 24 sections where the contents are: 1.
