Synopsis

This book, Writing Procedure Texts in English has been developed to provide students with a practical and developmental resource for improving their ability to write procedure texts in English. It is designed in connection with the MIRRORS Framework, a model that integrates instruction, mediation, assessment, reflection, and writing development into a continuous learning process.

The development of this book responds to learning needs identified in vocational English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classrooms. Students may experience difficulties in understanding technical procedure texts, organizing procedural steps, using appropriate technical vocabulary, applying grammatical structures, writing clear instructions, and revising their writing independently. They may also need more constructive feedback and learning activities that emphasize improvement rather than merely final scores.

For this reason, the book places students at the center of an active writing process. Rather than treating writing as a single task that begins with an assignment and ends with a score, the learning activities are intended to encourage students to develop their ideas, identify difficulties, refine language, reconsider their choices, organize information, review their texts, and communicate their completed work.

The learning experience is aligned with the seven MIRRORS stages: Mind Mapping, Identifying, Refining, Reconsidering, Organizing, Reviewing, and Socialization. These stages provide a structured pathway through which students can progressively develop their procedure-text writing competence. Each stage contributes to a different dimension of writing development while maintaining connections with the stages that come before and after it.

Particular attention is given to the authentic vocational character of procedure texts. Students are encouraged to work with topics and situations related to their vocational fields so that English writing becomes meaningful and connected to workplace communication. Through this approach, students can practice explaining processes, sequencing instructions, selecting technical vocabulary, and communicating information clearly and appropriately. The book also recognizes that effective writing development requires opportunities for guided support. Within the MIRRORS Framework, Dynamic Assessment is integrated into the learning process through Prompting, Modeling, Hinting, Evaluating and Feedback, and Scaffolding. These forms of support are intended to help learners overcome difficulties while gradually developing greater independence in completing writing tasks.
